Bowling Alone
Author/s: Putnam, Robert D.
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Paperbacks, New York, USA
Year of publication: 2000
ISBN No: 0-7432-0304-6
Abstract: Drawing on vast new data that reveal Americans’ changing behaviour, Putnam shows we have become increasingly disconnected from one another and how social structures—whether they be the PTA, church, or political parties—have disintegrated. Until the publication of this groundbreaking work, no one had so deftly diagnosed the harm that these broken bonds have wreaked on our physical and civic health, nor had anyone exalted the fundamental power of these bonds in creating a society that is happy, well educated, healthy, and safe.

Democracies in Flux
Author/s: Putnam, Robert D. (ed)
Publisher: Oxford University Press, New York, USA
Year of publication: 2004
ISBN No: 978-0-19-517160-0
Abstract: Here, Robert D. Putnam and a group of leading scholars examine the state of social capital in eight advanced democracies around the world. The book is filled with many intriguing revelations. The contributors note, for instance, that waning participation in unions, churches, and political parties seems to be virtually universal, a troubling discovery as these forms of social capital are especially important for empowering less educated, less affluent portions of the population. Social capital—good will, fellowship, sympathy, and social intercourse—is vitally important both for the health of our communities and for our own physical and psychological well being. Offering a panoramic look at social capital around the world, this book makes an important contribution to our understanding of these phenomena and why they are important in today’s world.

Year of publication: 2008
ISBN No: 0624045979X
Abstract: Business leader, activist and academic MAMPHELA RAMPHELE tackles the ghosts of our past head-on in her frank discussion of the state of our democracy. Racism and sexism, a focus on transformation at the expense of delivery, capacity problems and the unintended consequences of policies such as Black Economic Empowerment and affirmative action are among the dilemmas she dissects. Ramphele makes a strong please for active citizenship, for channelling anger into creative energy. ‘Our tendency to label whatever we disagree with as hostile speaks to the incompleteness of our journey. We need to acknowledge the woundedness of our psyche as part of the legacy of our past.’ Unflinching and inspirational, Laying Ghosts to Rest is a powerful call to action.
The Judicial Institution in Southern Africa
Author/s: Van De Vijver, Linda (Ed)
Publisher: Cape Town: Siber Ink
Year of publication: 2006
ISBN No: 1-920025-11-1
Abstract: With the introduction of constitutional democratic models of government in Anglophone Africa recently, the political profile of the courts has been elevated. Judicial authority to review acts of the legislature and the executive against standards and processes set in a written constitution has focussed particular attention on the independence and accountability of the superior courts. This study seeks to assess the formal provisions of the law regulating the appointment and conditions of service of judges across eleven legal systems in southern and east Africa, against a framework of ideal principles. The chapters reveal an unevenness in the law and the practices relating to judicial service, and recommendations for improvements are made.
