About the programme

Non-profit organisations play a critical role in building a strong and stable democracy in South Africa. Central to our democracy are the principles of human rights.

In order to effectively do their job in ensuring the protection and defence of the rights of all persons, these human rights organisations need to sustain their existence well into the future. To this end, the Atlantic Human Rights Sustainability Programme (AHRSP) aims to support the establishment of self-sustaining advancement operations among selected NPOs working in the field of human rights amongst the rural poor. This four-year pilot programme, funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies, is the first of its kind.

The participating organisations are:

The Black Sash
Legal Resources Centre
Nkuzi Development
ProBono.Org
Studies in Poverty and Inequality Institute
Transkei Land Service Organisation

What we do

The programme includes a creative mix of needs-based technical assistance, training workshops, site visits, benchmark assessments and annual retreats, all intended to increase the potential for financial sustainability of the participating organisations and to build capacity to attract and maintain social investment.

Each organisation sets annual advancement milestones. Challenge grants are awarded when these annual benchmarks are achieved. The programme also seeks to identify and document local approaches to advancement in the non-profit sector. This body of growing knowledge on advancement practices will contribute to the programme’s broader goal of building consciousness amongst South Africans of the critical need to actively support public benefit organisations.
