About the programme

Law and policy shape our world and how we function in it. The same is true for non-profit organisations (NPOs) as well as donors. Therefore, it is critical that both NPOs and philanthropists understand - and are able to respond to - the legal and policy environment in which they work. This broader environment has a significant impact on the long-term financial sustainability of the non-profit sector as a whole. Any effort to advance an organisation’s future has to consider policy and legislation and how these factors impact on their operations. Inyathelo’s Governance and Policy Development Programme is focused on equipping NPOs and philanthropists to consider and respond to the policy and legislative environment in which they function.

What we do

The Governance and Policy Development Programme aims to:

  • Develop capacity of individuals and organisations to ensure good governance and legal compliance.
  • Enhance the capacity of governing boards to govern NPOs efficiently and effectively.
  • Produce and disseminate cutting-edge resources related to effective governance and related legislation.

How we do it

Research and Publications

To assist in understanding the policy and legislative landscape in which NPOs operate, the governance and policy development programme undertakes focused research that applies to both the non-profit and philanthropy sectors. This research enables Inyathelo to offer an evidence-based understanding of law and policy on organisational governance and to develop material resources that assist organisations in their sustainability efforts.

Inyathelo has published and produced numerous materials on good governance for NPOs and related laws and policies. These are available in a range of DVDs, booklets and primers. Inyathelo has recently launched an electronic publication called Insights which aims to raise awareness of the latest changes in policies and laws that affect NPOs.

Publications include:

  1. Advancing Philanthropy
  2. Governing Boards in the Non-profit sector
  3. The Role of Boards - The NP Sector (a DVD)
  4. Risk Management for Non-profit boards
  5. Recruitment, Orientation and Involvement of Non-profit boards
  6. Insights: Third Sector Law
  7. Primers: Effective Philanthropists
