Inspiring the Youth to Engage Philanthropy
First started in 2006, the YIPPSA programme was extended to 3 schools in historically marginalised townships in the Cape Peninsula. Using a combination of structured interventions and practical assignments, learners were encouraged to adopt a social service project in their community and develop fundraising strategies that would address some of the needs in their organisation of their choice.
Learners hand over the funds raised to the community organisation at their annual Matric Ball. Learners of the following year are challenged to equal or better their efforts and a giving board is put up at the school to recognise the contribution of each class year.

Philanthropy as a Learning Tool
YIPPSA has been endorsed by the Deputy Minister of Social Development, Dr Jean Swanson-Jacobs. The programme is currently being implemented in nine schools representing a cross-section of private schools; former ‘Model C schools’; and schools in historically disadvantaged communities in Cape Town and its surrounding township areas.
YIPPSA gives young people the opportunity to connect with key issues in their communities; to build their leadership skills and self-esteem; develop creative and analytical thinking; to take informed risk and nourish their community involvement.
YIPPSA participating schools for 2009 are:
Langa High School Cape Town High School Herzlia High School Mannenberg High School Milnerton High School Oude Molen High School Zwaanswyk High School St Andrews High School Luhlaza High School
YIPPSA Alumni Programme
At the end of 2008 a number of students who had graduated from high school asked if there was a way in which they could continue to be part of YIPPSA. The YIPPSA Alumni Programme was borne. These young people are now at colleges and universities and will continue to grow their fundraising, marketing, grant making, communication and social entrepreneurship skills with us. The YIPPSA Alumni will also have a very special role to play in encouraging and mentoring the students on the YIPPSA Schools programme.
