The Inyathelo Philanthropy Awards

Inyathelo - the South African Institute for Advancement - dedicated to the promotion of philanthropy in South Africa, is pleased to announce its call for nominations for the Inyathelo Philanthropy Awards 2010.



These awards recognize extraordinary individuals who have shown outstanding leadership in the area of personal philanthropy in South Africa and who, through their giving, have made a remarkable difference in bringing about sustainable social change. The Inyathelo spotlight is not only on those who give large sums of money, but also focuses on those who achieve a positive long-term impact on social development regardless of the amount involved. The awardees will be announced at a gala dinner in Cape Town on Tuesday 3rd November 2009.

Send us your nominations in the following categories:

Special Recognition Award for Philanthropy
This Award is in recognition of an individual philanthropist for his/her exceptional commitment to the advancement of philanthropy and dedication to social giving to bring about beneficial change in South Africa.

Youth in Philanthropy Award
This Award is for a young person under the age of 35 who has pioneered creative ways of addressing development or social issues in his/her own community through direct financial support, development of giving programmes, and the cultivation of a young generation of philanthropic leaders.

Women in Philanthropy Award
This Award recognises the contribution of an outstanding woman philanthropist for her leadership and innovation in growing awareness of philanthropy and who has, through her example, encouraged personal social giving in South Africa.

Community Philanthropy Award
This Award recognises an individual who has worked tirelessly to create a more positive and healthy environment in a particular community, giving of their personal money, their energy and their creativity to build initiatives and to encourage others to give.

Lifetime Achievement Award for Philanthropy
This Award pays tribute to individuals who during their lifetimes have tirelessly dedicated themselves and their financial resources to bring about social change, and to build a culture of giving in South Africa.

The Review Process

The Inyathelo Philanthropy Awards are based on a submission and review process that relies on a thorough evaluation of each nomination according to set criteria. These criteria are consistently applied by the Inyathelo Awards Review Panel. The members of this review panel for 2010 are:

  1. Ms Zenariah Barends, Inyathelo trustee
  2. Ms Amanda Bloch, Patron, Children’s Hospital Trust and Inyathelo Philanthropy Awardee 2007
  3. Ms Shelagh Gastrow, Executive Director, Inyathelo
  4. Ms Amelia Jones, CEO, Community Chest Western Cape
  5. Ms Sizile Mabaso, CEO, SM Business Consultants
  6. Dr Ivan May, CEO, Radio Today
  7. Dr Mills Soko, Inyathelo trustee
  8. Dr Iqbal Surve, Inyathelo trustee

All the above panel members are actively involved in the promotion of philanthropy.
