Inyathelo 2009 Annual Report now available
12 Aug 2009

A year of growth

SHELAGH GASTROW, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

2008 was a year of growth for Inyathelo, followed by consolidation. After six years of running a tight ship with a small staff complement, we made the strategic decision to expand our training programme to other parts of South Africa, particularly KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. In addition, we added two new programmes to our existing complement, namely our Governance Programme and our programme to strengthen the advancement capacity of select human rights organisations that are working with the rural poor. Inyathelo has always viewed non-profit governance as a key component of advancement.

Besides reassuring donors that an organisation is legally compliant, the quality of its board plays a key role in aligning the organisation, supporting the Executive Director and creating confidence amongst external stakeholders, including donors. When the Non-Profit Consortium made the decision to close its doors, Inyathelo recognised the enormous loss this would be for the non-profit sector. In discussion with key donors, it was agreed that Inyathelo would absorb key NPC staff and continue with a governance programme to ensure that the service would still be available to the sector. We are delighted that the transition was smooth and ex-NPC staff are now fully integrated and extremely busy within the Inyathelo family. read more
