Global report to be launched at Kresge retreat
19 Jul 2010

The International Social Science Council (ISSC) is to partner with Inyathelo for the South African launch of the World Social Science Report at the Kresge Leadership Retreat to be held at the Arabella Western Cape Hotel and Spa from October 11 to 13.

The leadership retreat is aimed at senior university and academic leaders as well as advancement professionals.

The World Social Science Report 2010 offers a comprehensive overview of the global state of the social sciences.  A leading theme of the report is knowledge divides: how social science disciplines are coping and evolving in the face of unequal conditions and diverging trends. The Report is a co-publication of UNESCO and the International Social Science Council (ISSC).

The Report draws out the inequalities and asymmetries in social science knowledge production and so contains important messages for governments on the imperative to build capacity in the social sciences. The Director-General, in her Foreword, comments, “Social scientists produce work of outstanding quality and tremendous practical value, but, as this report illustrates, social scientific knowledge is often the least-developed in those parts of the world where it is most keenly needed”.

In preparing the World Social Science Report 2010, the ISSC mobilised the global social science community; hundreds of professional social scientists contributed as authors, editorial board members, or reviewers. The authors were selected so as to ensure that researchers from all parts of the world, and across different disciplines, would have a voice.
