With August being Women’s Month, it’s fitting that our Executive Director Jessica Rees-Jones will shortly be attending a major conference where female leaders will connect and collaborate to help bring about social and economic transformation across the continent.
The ‘Women Advancing Africa’ conference, an initiative by the Graça Machel Trust, is taking place from 9-12 August in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania and East Africa’s commercial hub and port.
“The programme is extremely varied and resonates a great deal with the advocacy work that Inyathelo undertakes,” said Jessica. “We will celebrate women’s achievements, while identifying opportunities to strengthen their participation in the economy.”
The conference promises to be a forum for some fascinating female leaders, says Jessica, as about 250 participants will represent agribusiness, energy and extractives, services and trade, technology, finance and media and creative industries.
Some highlights will include discussions on how young African leaders view Africa’s future; a traders’ exhibition; breakfast co-create sessions on leadership, wellness and innovation; and mothers in conversation with their daughters, discussing the changing nature of women’s activism. A book, Women Creating Wealth, will feature stories of successful female entrepreneurs across Africa.
“Inyathelo is about to embark on strategic planning for the next three to five years, expanding its network and influence,” concluded Jessica. “We can achieve so much more through partnerships, and I look forward to meeting many female leaders whom Inyathelo can collaborate with to help drive social and economic transformation and develop civil society.”
