Inyathelo mourns the passing of Gerald Kraak, Head of the South African office of The Atlantic Philanthropies.
Gerald's commitment to freedom, human rights, justice and reconciliation and the LGBTI sector in particular made a major impact on South Africa’s body politic and its civil society. We would like to express our sympathy with his family and with The Atlantic Philanthropies community.
Gerald, who died after a battle with cancer, studied English and history at the University of Cape Town. He worked in the anti-apartheid movement and left South Africa to avoid conscription into the military. Gerald published two books on South African politics and directed a film documentary on gay conscripts in the apartheid army.
