Advancement Training and Support

At Inyathelo, we work with institutions and organisations in developing the capacity of their Advancement structures. This service includes: baseline assessment of existing Advancement practices; advising senior management on best Advancement practice, audits of existing functionality, including fundraising, development, communication, alumni relations, marketing and public affairs; recommendations on new Advancement structures and business processes; and skills training with staff.

The Advancement Training and Support (ATS) team works with grantseekers in civil society and institutions in strengthening their advancement capacity to achieve financial sustainability. The team is focused on working with non-profit organisations, through ASK Inyathelo - the Inyathelo Nonprofit Clinic, and with Higher Education Institutions in South Africa. Both of Inyathelo’s current multi-year capacity development programmes are run by the ATS Unit. These are the higher education-focused Kresge Foundation Special Initiative in South Africa (KFSI) and non-profit organisation-focused Atlantic Human Rights Programme (AHRP).

ATS works with these organisations and institutions through the following vehicles:

  • Programmes such as the Kresge Foundation Special Initiative (KFSI) in South Africa and the Atlantic Human Rights Programme (AHRP) which provide tailored solutions to the programmes’ grantee organisations. These programmes are long-term capacity development initiatives with a duration of three to five years.
  • ASK Inyathelo – The Inyathelo Non-profit Clinic: Through the clinic, advice and mentorship is provided on a one-to-one basis in a professional environment. These one-to-one sessions are conducted either by the Executive Director, Programme Director or Programme Staff, depending on the nature of the consultation. The Non-profit Clinic also offers workshops, training, access to the Inyathelo Resource Centre, and opportunities to participate in symposia and other discussion and skills-sharing forums.
  • Consultancy services to institutions and organisations in all the areas outlined above.
  • Bespoke training interventions with university Foundation boards and organisational governing bodies.
  • The development and provision of toolkits, handbooks and other core information resources.
