Founding Documents

The South African Institute for Advancement (Inyathelo) was established as a non-profit trust in September 2002 with two core mandates: to promote philanthropy in South Africa and to develop the capacity of institutions and non-profit organisations (NPOs) to achieve their objectives in a sustainable manner through the development of local advancement knowledge and practice. Inyathelo’s application of “Advancement” practice is based on an integrated and inclusive approach through which organisations, in partnership with key stakeholders and supporters, move together towards achieving long-term sustainability.

We encourage organisations and institutions to build and maintain strong relationships with key external constituencies, including the state, their beneficiaries, their supporters, the media, and the communities in which they operate to bring about lasting social change; invest and develop social capital, and promote a culture of social giving. The promotion of sustainable philanthropy in South Africa, in the terms outlined above, is key to the sustainability of our institutions and organisations.

Inyathelo’s Trust Registration No is IT2285/2002 and its NPO Registration No is 023-432-NPO.
